Glencar Lodge is a specifically designed unit to meet the needs of residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Laurel Lodge recognizes the special needs of people with Alzheimer's disease and other related memory impairments. 

Offering a fresh approach, we begin with understanding the stories and details of a senior's life so we can help them attain what we call "pleasant days." This means finding ways to involve residents in everyday activities they enjoy and can feel successful at, in specially designed surroundings that are both safe and stimulating. 

Our Recreational therapist is trained in the Sonas Programme and the Snoozlem room is the ideal environment for the Sonas Programme.

Sonas is an approach to working with people with communication impairments that helps to:
   Promote interaction
   Prevent isolation
   Maintain functional capacity
   Uphold dignity
   Enhance quality of life
   Activate potential to communicate

This programme helps improve the communication capacity and quality of life of older people in care. The programme focus on the overall care environment, and on the needs of carers, in fostering quality in care delivery.

Sonas programme was pioneered by Sr. Mary Threadgold in 1990. Working as a speech and language therapist with people with intellectual disabilities, and with a special interest in older people, Sr. Mary became aware of the lack of stimulation and activity in many nursing homes and hospitals for older people.

Regarding the senses as the gateways to communication, the programme utlises a system of multi-sensory stimulation involving music, touch, scent and simple memory exercises and incorporates structure and repetition so that it is tailored to the needs of older people with dementia, including Alzheimers, stroke and Parkinson’s Disease. 

The highly qualified staff at Laurel Lodge have many years experience working with Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients and 24 hour nursing care is provided.
